Glass Sculpture

for piano trio

Program notes

The starting point of the work is glass as a metaphor and its properties as a material. This inspires music with bright, translucent, reflective and clear surfaces that are at once strong and sensitive, soft and sharp, stagnant and moving. The reference to a sculpture plays with the contradiction between music and sculpture: a piece of music has a beginning, a middle and an end, i.e. it takes place in time, unlike a sculpture, which is experienced in space.

The work is divided in five movements, performed without pauses in between.

I: like polishing a champagne glass
II: easily fractured
III: like a garden of windchimes
IV: perfection of shape
V: coda
