Time Machine

for harpsichord & electronics

Program notes

Time Machine is a piece for harpsichord and electronics. The title refers to the way the music is formed by a chain of associations reminiscent of the human mind: it jumps between memories and thoughts, mixing the past and the present, and revealing unexpected connections. Like the memory, the piece is built on constant motion — never settling yet lingering momentarily at the edge of a memory or a feeling.

The sound of a harpsichord carries with it the memories and traditions of past eras, while the electronic sound anchors it in the present and opens a pathway to the future. In this way, the instrument becomes a “time machine”, inviting the listener both to remember and to imagine — to follow the wild tangle of memories, predictions, and associations.

The piece focuses on the dialogue between the electronic sound material and the harpsichord. The electronics do not merely accompany; they react to the performer’s actions, respond, and transform in relation to the music played on the harpsichord. The result is a sound world that gestures toward both the past and the future, offering yet another interpretation of the present moment.
